The Metropolitan area encompasses cities in both states, most of which can be easily accessed from downtown Kansas City.

The climate is considered modified continental, with frequent and rapid fluctuations in weather during early spring. Summers are characterized as hot and humid, with winters being characterized as cold, with the heaviest snows typically arriving late in the season. Spring and Fall in this region are like none other with flowers and trees turning the landscape into magnificent dream scape of coloration. Average temperatures range from 29° F in January to 78° F in July. Precipitation in Kansas City averages 38.21 inches of rain and 20 inches of snow.

The Kansas City, MO-KS metropolitan statistical area (MSA) ranked 28th among all 361 MSAs based on 2006 total population, the latest official estimate. The MSA population increased by 6.75 percent between July 2000 (1,842,965) and July 2006 (1,967,405). The population is projected to increase to 2,252,265 by 2020 assuming that birth, death, and migration patterns experienced between 2000 and 2006 continue to 2020.
